The USGS
is the lead Federal agency responsible for water-use data. This responsibility
was given to the USGS by a Congressional act in 1977, which established the
National Water-Use Information Program. One objective of this program is to
determine the amount of surface water and ground water withdrawn nationally.
Every 5 years, the USGS publishes a nationwide accounting of water-use information
including specific data for public-supply, industrial, irrigation, and thermoelectric
power generation.
