The ADCP position and velocity data were modified as discussed in the preceding sections and new ASCII files were created to facilitate the analysis of flow velocities in St. Clair River. The new format is a rectangular array of data, similar to that seen in a spreadsheet, with each valid velocity measurement at a depth cell contained in an individual row. The column contents of each row are described in Table 2. The new format includes all valid data from a cross section by combining data from both the left-to-right and the right-to-left transects in a single file. The column “L2R” identifies the direction the transect was surveyed. Together, the ADCP data files provide point velocity data at more than 2.7 million locations in St. Clair River.

Table 2. Data attributes of acoustic Doppler current profiler data files that can be downloaded from the internet.
Column label Data attribute
Easting The adjusted easting position of the velocity measurement, referenced to the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83) State Plane Coordinate system for the southern zone of Michigan (2113), in international feet. (Equation 8).
Northing The adjusted northing position of the velocity measurement, referenced to the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83) State Plane Coordinate system for the southern zone of Michigan (2113), in international feet. (Equation 8).
Depth The depth below the water surface of the velocity measurement, in feet.
VelMag The magnitude of the measured water velocity, in feet per second.
VelAzmAdj The adjusted direction of water velocity, which is positive when measured clockwise from zero degrees north (along the positive y-axis. (Equation 9).
VelEastAdj The easting component of water velocity, in feet per second. (Equation 10).
VelNrthAdj The northing component of water velocity, in feet per second. (Equation 10).
VelUp The upward component of water velocity, in feet per second.
Latitude The latitude of the velocity measurement, in decimal degrees. In the data file, a value of 30.000000 indicates that the global positioning signal was not recorded.
Longitude The longitude of the velocity measurement, in decimal degrees. Note, a value of -30.000000 indicates that the global positioning signal was not recorded.
BotDep The distance between the water surface and the bottom of the river, in feet.
Discharge The flow (discharge of water) through the subarea defined by the flow velocity and area, in cubic feet per second.
TimeTotal Cumulative time since the beginning of the ADCP measurement, in seconds.
L2R An indicator of the direction in which the transect was measured. A value of 1 (logical true) indicates that the transect was measured from the left-to-right across the river (looking downstream), and is zero otherwise.
VelAzmMea The measured azimuth of the flow velocity, unadjusted for magnetic declination. The azimuth is positive when measured clockwise from zero degrees north (along the positive y-axis).
VelError An estimator of the precision of the velocity measurement, in feet per second.
BackScat The percent of the original acoustic signal that is scattered back to the ADCP unit. Backscatter is sometimes related to the amount of suspended material in the water column.
